Just finished reading Walk on Water by Michael Ruhlman, which is about pediatric heart surgery. In the book he mentions Werner Forsmann. Years ago Werner had the idea that a tube could be inserted into an arm vein and pushed until the tube found the heart. Not too many people raised their hand and said “Hey Try it on me.” So Werner did it to himself.
